Silicon dioxide, also known as silica (from silex Latin) or silicic acid, is a silicon oxide that has the chemical formula SiO2. Silica is most commonly found in nature as sand or quartz, and in diatom cell walls.
Silica is produced in a number of forms including fused quartz, crystals, irritated silica (or pyrogenic silica, trademarks Aerosil or Cab-O-Sil), colloidal silica, silica gel and airgel.
Silica is used primarily in the production of glass for windows, drinking glasses, beverage bottles, and many other uses. The majority of the optical fiber for telecommunications is also made of silica. This is the main raw material for many whiteware ceramics such as pottery, ceramics, porcelain, and the Portland cement industry.
